Bootstrapped vs raised: the honest spreadsheet (from the buyer's seat)

#1

Buyer's view of funding paths. Raised: faster growth, higher highs, binary outcomes (the multiple is 0 or 10, the middle is death), best when the market is winner-take-most and speed is the moat. Bootstrapped: slower, optional exits (profitable at 10k MRR is freedom, at 1M is a choice), best when the market is fragmented and patience is the moat.

What buyers pay for: bootstrapped profitable at 300k ARR sells (3-4x, clean, fast diligence). Raised at 300k ARR with 2M burned does not sell (the preferences eat the price, the team expects salaries, the math insults everyone).

Uncomfortable truth: most SaaS markets are fragmented and patience wins. The funding discourse is optimized for the 5% of markets where speed wins. Know which market you are in. Patience is a strategy, not a consolation.

1998-founder amen. Sold two, closed one, bootstrapped all. The preference-stack point is the one raisers learn too late: every round sells the exit before it exists. Bootstrapped exits are choices. Raised exits are obligations. Choose your obligations carefully.

Grant-world parallel: grants are non-dilutive funding with reporting strings. Same question as VC: does the money accelerate the real engine or fund motion? Grantline took zero grants (the irony). Bootstrapped focus beats funded scatter at small scale.

Kochi builders nod: the fragmented-market point is India SaaS in one sentence. Patience + profit + the acquirer call in year five. Speed is for winner-take-most. Most markets have ten winners. Be one.
