Your data model regrets: what would you change if you started again?

#1

The database outlives nearly every other decision. Frameworks get swapped. Tables stay.

Reply with one thing about your data model that you would do differently, and what it costs you today.

Regrets that come up often:

  • No account or workspace table. Everything hangs off the user, and now customers want teams.
  • Deleting rows for real, then needing to know what was deleted and when.
  • Money stored as a decimal number when it should be whole units of the smallest currency.
  • Times stored without a time zone.
  • A single status column doing the work of three.
  • Billing state copied from the payment provider and then drifting out of step.
  • No record of who changed what, discovered during the first customer dispute.
  • Ids that expose how many customers you have.

For each one, the useful detail is how you found out and how painful the migration was. That is what helps the next person decide whether to fix it now or live with it.
