Building a following that buys: my actual numbers after 3 years

#1

Designer who posts. Three years, weekly, no viral hits, no growth hacks. Numbers: 8,400 followers, 3.2% average engagement, 41% of Kerning Club leads cite a post, 140k revenue attributed. Slow, compounding, real.

What worked: teardowns in public (this forum's teardowns, weekly, free samples of the paid thing), opinions with receipts (every strong claim carries a number), and replying to everyone for the first year (compounding goodwill, now the community replies for me).

What did not: threads about design tools (engagement candy, zero leads), cross-posting everything everywhere (each platform wants native, repurposing flops), and the month I tried to be inspirational (cringe, unfollows, lesson learned).

Post the work, not the workflow. Clients buy outcomes, not process threads.

"Opinions with receipts" is the whole game. Retention hot takes with the spreadsheet attached built my entire pipeline. Naked opinions are noise. Receipts are marketing.

Photographer learning software: the "free samples of the paid thing" line unlocked something. My presets sell because the free ones prove the eye. Software trials are the same: prove the brain, sell the rest.

Newsletter confirmation: native-per-platform is the lesson everyone relearns. My X posts flop on LinkedIn and vice versa. Same brain, different rooms. Dress for the room.
