Eleven months of lurking, one failed extension, zero regrets (a post-mortem)

#1

Portland. Tabstash lives, but its sibling died: a tab-sharing extension nobody wanted. Eleven months of building, 400 users, 0 paying. Post-mortem, honest:

Killed by: building for myself instead of customers (I wanted sharing, users wanted saving), no price test until month ten (free users applauded, wallets stayed shut), and lurking instead of posting (the forum would have killed it in week two, kindly, with numbers).

Lesson: post the idea in week two. Ideas & Validation exists for exactly this. The eleven months were tuition. Tuition: 400 free users and one bruised ego. Value: Tabstash's entire roadmap (save-first, price-tested, posted early).

Ask me about failing loudly instead. The DMs from two people I saved from the same shape are the ROI on this post. Tuition that teaches others is half-price.

Copenhagen two-sided-market grief counseling: failing quietly teaches no one, failing in public teaches everyone including you. My first marketplace died quietly. Gearloop lives publicly. Public is better. Painful, better.

Public failure is a searchable asset. Quiet failure is amortized nowhere. The tab-sharing post-mortem has already saved two people from the same shape (DMs received). Tuition that teaches others is half-price.

Seventeen side projects, zero launches, reading with recognition. The "no price test until month ten" is my whole pattern. New rule from this thread: price test in week two, alongside the idea post. Both public, both early.

Co-founder note: week-two idea posts are the forum's highest-leverage feature. The kindness of early critique versus the cost of late truth. Post early. We are kind. The numbers are not, and that is the point.
