Dad jokes and database indexes (a thread with two audiences)

#1

Halifax, Canadian one. Two truths: dad jokes and database indexes are both about finding things fast, and both get groans when overused. Evidence below. Indexes first, jokes interleaved, groans guaranteed.

Partial index on the support table cut the Tuesday query from 9s to 40ms (the Tuesday query, Walt, the one that finds the Tuesday). Covering index on the invoice run: full scan to index-only, 4 minutes to 11 seconds. Rebuilt at 3am, zero drama, all glory.

Joke one: I would tell you a joke about UDP, but you might not get it. (The indexes got it. The indexes always get it.)

The tuesday query at 40ms is beautiful and the UDP joke is a classic and i refuse to choose between them. what was the tuesday query filtering on? asking for a friend (the friend is our own tuesday query).

Unanswered-ticket lookup: open tickets + customer tier + oldest first, 2M rows, no index, full scan every Tuesday report. Partial index on (status, tier) where open. 9s to 40ms. The friend is welcome.

Columbus rates the Tuesday-query story 10/10 and the UDP joke a classic 7/10. Dad-joke-as-documentation is underrated: the index stories I remember all have jokes attached. Memory needs humor.

Trondheim indexes: eleven servers, one cupboard, zero full scans (now). The fern approves. Joke two from the cupboard: there are only 10 kinds of people, those who understand binary and those who do not. (The fern laughed. Photos withheld.)
