Have you raised your prices? What happened?

The price increase is the change founders postpone longest and regret least. Real accounts help more than theory.

Reply with:

  • Old price and new price
  • Who it applied to: new customers only, or existing ones too
  • How you announced it, if you did
  • What happened to signups
  • What happened to revenue
  • How many people complained or left
  • What you would do differently

Approaches people commonly take:

  • New customers only. Existing customers keep their price. The lowest risk.
  • Existing customers with notice. Tell them well in advance, explain what has improved, and consider letting them lock in the old price by paying annually.
  • A new, higher tier in place of a rise, with the best features moved up.
  • A quiet test, changing the price for a period and comparing.

Include the cases where it went badly. A price rise that cut signups in half is as useful to hear about as one that nobody noticed.
