What makes a showcase post that people click on?

#1

A product thread competes with every other thread on the page. A few things decide whether it gets opened.

The title does most of the work. Compare:

  • "Check out my new app!"
  • "InvoiceCat: chases late invoices for freelancers, automatically"

The second says what it is and who it is for. Use the product name, then the plain description.

The first two lines should make sense to someone who knows nothing about you. Say what it does and who it is for before you say how you built it.

Show it. A screenshot or a thirty-second video of the real product beats any description.

Give the price. People wonder, and hiding it reads badly.

Say something true about the stage. "Launched last week, four users, two of them my friends" makes people want to help. A polished pitch makes them scroll on.

Ask for one thing. "What is confusing on the pricing page?" gets answers. "Any feedback welcome" gets none.

Reply to every comment, quickly, on the first day.

Give before you ask. Members who have left thoughtful replies on other products get more of them on their own.
