What is the worst piece of advice you actually followed?

#1

I'll start. "Build an audience first." I spent fourteen months posting threads. I got 6,000 followers and when I launched, 11 of them bought. Eleven.

#2

"Move fast and break things." I moved fast. I broke the thing. The thing was the database.

#3

"Your logo should work at 16 pixels." It should, but I spent three weeks on a favicon for a product with no customers.

#6

"Never talk price until they see the value." 1999. Spent six weeks on a deal with a company that couldn't afford me. Now the price is on the website and the first call takes ten minutes.

#7

"Add social features!" I added a feed to a habit app. Nobody wants to see a stranger's flossing streak!!

#8

"Raise prices until someone complains." Someone complained at the first increase. It was my mother.

#9

"Niche down." I niched down to Notion templates for left-handed wedding planners. There were two. They already had templates.

#12

Not from here, but: "do not tell anyone your idea, they will steal it." I kept Stokvel secret for a year. When I finally told people, nobody stole it and three of them improved it.

#13

"Always keep the founder on for two years after an acquisition." I did that with the first company I bought. He was miserable, I was miserable, the customers could tell. Now it is ninety days and a phone number.
