Selling apps where nobody has a card: what works in Nigeria

#1

Kobo Count is expense tracking for market traders. Most of my users have no bank card they would put into a phone. Things I tried, in order:

  1. Play Store billing. 2% of people who tapped "upgrade" finished.
  2. Bank transfer with a reference code. 23% finished, but I matched payments by hand every evening.
  3. Airtime payment through an aggregator. 41% finished. The aggregator takes 30%.
  4. Selling 3-month codes through the people who already sell phone credit in the market. 60% of my revenue now.

Number 4 is not software. It is a man called Emeka with a kiosk.

Emeka is your distribution and your payment processor. This is the correct answer and nobody outside the market would have designed it. What margin does he take?

Same pattern in Cairo with prayer time apps. Vodafone Cash and kiosk codes. Card billing is under a tenth of revenue.

Reading this as someone about to charge susu groups in Accra. Mobile money is the default here, cards are rare. Chidi, did you ever regret not starting with number 4?

Bookmarking. Thriftline sellers in Kano ask me weekly whether they can pay "through the POS man".
