For finding a partner, splitting equity, making a first hire and working with contractors.
Looking for a co-founder? Post:
- What you are building and how far along it is
- What you bring: skills, time, money, customers
- What you need from a partner
- Your time commitment and whether you are paid elsewhere
- Where you are and your time zone
- How you think about equity
Before you commit to anyone
- Work on something small together first. A two-week project shows more than ten calls.
- Talk early about money, hours, who decides what, and what happens if one of you leaves.
- Put it in writing, including vesting, so that equity is earned over time.
- Get a lawyer to draw up the agreement.

House rules
- No unpaid "equity only" roles dressed up as jobs. If you are offering a partnership, call it that.
- Be honest about the stage. "Pre-revenue, two users" is fine. Hiding it wastes everyone's time.
